Smart home device: Weather Station

It has been nearly one year when I came an idea to design a smart home device until I have been awarded several days ago. When I look back at the period of designing the device, I was excited and I am proud it has come true. So, I will write down the details about Weather Station although it had been completed long time ago.

First of all, I would like to show the appearance of Weather Station. I think it looks no bad and it has natural style. Actually, it was worth the efforts because I had no other tools to design a better case.

There will be a long story if I give a description of how I make this device. So before I introduce this device, I would like to show how to use this device. The Weather Station can display the time and weather forecast of the city you live, the temperature and humidity of the room you live. It will start working after you enter the WiFi name, password and then power on it(Lately, I am developing a application so that I can enter the WiFi name and password on my smart phone to get WiFi connected) . The data will update every 10 minutes from internet so there are almost no errors about the time. There are four layouts of the display in orders, the time of the city, the humidity and temperature of the room, weather forecast of 3 days about the city, tomorrow’s weather forecast of the city. If you rotate the device to right, the layout will change into next layout. And if you rotate the device to left, the layout will change into the layout before.  Of course you have to put it straight before your next rotation.

I give a lot of descriptions on how to use temperature and humidity sensor to get the data and upload to a free cloud named freeboard. Here is the blog about it: Display the data from the cloud using ESP8266.

So the work I have to do next is the changes of layouts. I use a accelerometer sensor to get the angles of the device. If it rotates to right, the layout will come to the next one. And if it rotates to left, the layout will go back to the one before.

The last work is to design the case of the device. I used to make a case by 3D printer. But I found it difficult to put all sensors and microcontroller into the case. Lastly I choose laser cutter to get a wooden case because it looks like natural style. After I complete the design paper and assemble it, the device had been done.

In the new year of 2019, I am going to make some improvements of the Weather Station. The main job is to design an application to display the data of Weather Station, and the Weather Station can also be operated through the application. Until now, the temperature and humidity can be displayed in application. I will do more work in coming days!
